The Story
This book began with no plan at all. My friend Hisako Ichiki — an architect everyone calls Chako — and I made one loose promise: let’s do something interesting in the city of Los Angeles. We deliberately didn’t decide what. For three months we talked for hours, brainstormed, and ran experiment after experiment — once hauling a sofa into the giant freight elevator of a converted factory loft in downtown LA and living in it for a whole day.
A vague ambition eventually surfaced — we wanted to make something that would spark creativity in the people around us — but we had no idea what form it should take. Then one exercise from all those experiments stayed with us: picking up ordinary products and sketching completely different uses for them. Only later did we realize the exercise itself had been limbering up our brains, training us to think flexibly. So we went back to those sketches with a simple thought: what if we just showed these to people?
We art-directed the concepts, shot every one as original photography, and shaped the work into a book. Then we pitched it to more than ten publishers. Exactly one said yes — and that single yes carried extra•ordinary into the world.
What I Made 制作したもの
I co-authored and art-directed the entire book. I photographed all the concepts — setting up controlled lighting and precise compositions to give mundane objects a sense of wonder. I designed every layout in Adobe InDesign, building a reading rhythm that mirrored the book’s core message: look closer, look differently.
To launch the book, we turned an LA gallery into the book itself — an exhibition and installation where concepts from its pages were built as real, functional pieces. The book went on to sell 11,000+ copies worldwide and was later featured in Japan’s DESIGN QUARTERLY magazine.

From Prototype to Published Book
The very first prototype — a handmade book that practices what it preaches. Its spine is a real brush, so the book itself has a second use — photographed resting in its dustpan.
The published edition — extra•ordinary (Rockport Publishing, 2013). 実際に出版された市販版 — extra•ordinary(Rockport Publishing、2013年)。
