The Story
Before COVID, the autumn festival at the New York Japanese Saturday School relied heavily on food sales for fundraising — several parent volunteers ran Japanese food stalls, and games were an afterthought: just three small booths with minimal decoration. After two years of online-only school (2020–2021), the festival was gone. When it returned in 2022, everything had changed: no food vendors (both regulations and volunteer attrition), no dense crowd formats allowed, and the fundraising model was broken.
I became chairperson with a clear strategic goal: shift the revenue pillar from food to games. This meant designing games from the ground up — not just as entertainment, but as the economic engine of the festival. I researched Japanese ennichi (縁日) festival games exhaustively, analyzing what makes them work: they’re visually engaging even for spectators, the rules are learnable by watching, rounds are short (1–2 minutes for fast turnover), and they accommodate ages from kindergarten through high school. These became my design criteria.
What I Made 制作したもの
Every game was designed, prototyped, and tested — some took multiple iterations across years. The shooting gallery (射的) is a good example: I originally wanted cork-gun shooting, but firearms of any kind were prohibited in American schools. Year one, I tried slingshots — they didn’t work well for younger children. By year two, I’d redesigned it entirely as "Flying Chicken" — stretchy rubber chickens launched from the fingertips — which became one of the most popular games. I also invited students to propose new game ideas, then co-designed and validated them with adult volunteers before building.
Over three years (2022–2024), I grew the game lineup from 3 inherited booths to 11–12 original games, all built from the ground up. Simultaneously, I developed a comprehensive brand identity anchored in the character “祭” (festival) and the school’s guiding philosophy of “知行合一” — the unity of knowledge and action. This concept became the foundation for every design decision: the logo, patterns, noren (booth curtains), and environmental graphics. I managed 110+ volunteers across all stations.

Signage & Wayfinding
Beyond the games, the festival got a full custom signage and wayfinding system — from playful restroom trivia posters to entry banners and info boards, all in the same visual language.
Hand-Built Games — Design & In Action
Below are 7 of the 11+ games I designed and hand-built. Each follows the design language I established from researching Japanese ennichi games: visually engaging for spectators, rules learnable by watching, 1–2 minute rounds for fast turnover, and accessible to ages 5 through 18. The Flying Chicken, for example, evolved from a shooting gallery concept — cork guns were prohibited in schools, slingshots didn’t work for younger kids — into its final form through two years of iteration. All faces have been AI-replaced or blurred for privacy.

The “treasure exchange card” ties the games together as a system: kids collect a star at every booth, then redeem the full card for a prize.
