The Opportunity

The Japanese Weekend School of New York (JWSNY) lacked a unified community identity that could bridge its educational mission with the vibrant street culture of New York City. The school needed something more than standard merchandise — it needed wearable art that students, faculty, and parents would be proud to wear, transforming school spirit into a visible, shared identity.

My Direction

I designed an apparel collection using bold, hand-drawn typography and symbolic illustrations that represented layers of learning, friendship, and cultural identity. The graffiti-inspired aesthetic drew directly from NYC street art traditions while honoring the school's Japanese heritage — creating designs that felt authentically New York and distinctly JWSNY.

The project extended beyond design into execution — I led the pop-up store experience on campus, creating an event that turned the collection launch into a community celebration. The result was over 50% adoption among students, faculty, and parents, transforming the campus visual landscape and significantly strengthening community unity and belonging.
